Annual assessment in plain English

The MOT tester annual assessment is the yearly test you must pass (alongside your annual training) to keep your tester status for the next training year.

For the 2026 to 2027 training year, you must complete the assessment between 1 April 2026 and 31 March 2027 and pass by the end of the training year.

Assessment format for 2026 to 2027

DVSA guidance for 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027 says:

  • The assessment is taken online (for example at home or at your provider)
  • The test is 30 multiple-choice questions
  • It usually takes around 1 hour
  • The pass mark is 80%

Topics you’ll be assessed on

Your annual assessment topics are published on GOV.UK for each training year.

DVSA provides both:

  • A page that lists the overall training topic categories for 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027
  • Example questions and a breakdown that depend on whether you test:
    • Group A (motorcycles and sidecars)
    • Group B (cars and passenger vehicles)

To avoid using out-of-date material, always verify the current year topics on DVSA’s:

  • MOT tester annual assessment: training topics and sample questions

Certificates and where to find them on MTS

If you pass, you get a certificate.

DVSA says you’ll find it in the “Annual assessment certificates” section of your MOT testing service profile (check your assessment provider has uploaded it if you cannot see it).

If you test both vehicle groups, you may have separate certificates for each group.

If you miss the completion deadline

If your annual training and annual assessment are not completed by 31 March, DVSA says your MOT testing account will be suspended.

In practice, that means you cannot carry out MOT tests until you meet the training and assessment requirements again, including the further steps needed to unsuspend your account.

For station workflows, keep tester status and deadlines visible in MOT Lens (see MOT Lens Tester Management).
