MOT equipment calibration

How MOT test equipment calibration works in practice — including what to keep, calibration certificate retention (at least 2 years including expired), and how to make calibration evidence readily retrievable.

Last reviewed: 2026-08-19

Calibration certificates you must be able to show

DVSA guidance expects Authorised Examiners to keep MOT testing equipment in good order and ensure measuring apparatus is calibrated in accordance with DVSA requirements.

That means you need calibration records and certificates that you can produce if asked.

Calibration retention: keep evidence for at least 2 years

DVSA guidance states that calibration certificates/records must be kept for at least 2 years, including expired certificates.

DVSA also states calibration records must be:

  • readily retrievable
  • kept for a minimum of two years
  • available digitally or as hardcopy

What to do if equipment is out of calibration

If mandatory equipment is not re-calibrated by its due date, DVSA guidance says testing using that equipment must stop until it is brought back into calibration.

How MOT Lens helps you keep calibration evidence accessible

MOT Lens supports equipment workflows by keeping calibration status, documents and history organised in one place (see MOT Lens Equipment).

FAQ

Do I need to keep expired calibration certificates?

Yes. DVSA guidance requires calibration certificates to be kept for at least 2 years, including expired certificates.

Can calibration records be digital?

Yes. DVSA guidance says calibration records may be retained digitally or as a hardcopy.

What does “readily retrievable” mean?

It means you should be able to produce calibration records for review when asked, without unreasonable delay.

What happens if my equipment is out of calibration?

DVSA guidance says testing using that equipment must stop until the equipment is recalibrated.

What should I link to each calibration record?

Link the calibration evidence to the specific equipment item in your register (serial/identifier), so you can verify you are using the correct certificate.
